3 Common Heat Pump Problems

If your home in Leesburg, FL, uses a heat pump for heating purposes, you enjoy high levels of efficiency. That’s great news not only for your comfort but also your finances. While heat pumps are durable and nearly indestructible, they can experience problems, especially if you neglect maintenance. Here are three common heat pump problems:

Icing Up

During the winter, it’s not uncommon for frost to cover the heat pump. And every so often, it’s designed to go into defrost mode to remove the frost. Unfortunately, if your system becomes encased in ice, it may not function properly. Removing the ice before it causes permanent damage to the fan blades, fins or compressor is crucial.

Here’s What You Can Do

If you find the heat pump frozen, never try to chip away the ice from the fan coils. Instead, you can try to melt the ice with water from a hose or with warm tap water. If unsuccessful, you need to enlist the help of an HVAC professional.

Running Constantly

Florida summers are known for triple-digit temperatures, so your unit will have to work harder than it does in the fall. But if your heat pump never turns off, it could be struggling to reach the desired temperature. Before you call a service technician, there are few things you can do to troubleshoot the problem.

Here’s What You Can Do

Make sure you’ve set your thermostat for heating when it’s chilly and cooling when it’s mild. A simple switch of the button can rectify the issue.

Blowing Cold in Heat Mode

Check to make sure the power supply wasn’t accidentally switched to cooling mode. Following this, also inspect your outside unit and make sure it’s not iced over. If everything seems to be fine on inspection, there could be issues with the compressor or valves. You may also be low on refrigerant charge.
